A truly beautiful film, geart acting, perfect image, execllent music...one of the best irani film ever made.
Mehrollah is a 14-year-old boy who feels obliged to emigrate to the South coast of Iran to provide for his family upon his father's death. After a long period he returns home with gifts and money for his mother and sisters. But he faces a disconcerting reality: his mother has remarried, and her new husband has moved the family to a bigger, more comfortable house. Mehrollah refuses to accept the new family set-up and will not visit the new residence. He tries to take his sisters with him, destroys the windows and the garden of the new home, creating hostility between his family and his mother's new husband. Mehrollah gets sick and is taken to his family's house to recover. One night he steals his stepfather's gun and escapes to the city. The stepfather goes after his gun and Mehrollah.
As in many Iranian films, the protagonist is a boy (remember The White Balloon) who serves as a metaphor for innocence, the need for justice and a pure attitude against an exploitative world. This family drama projects the simplicity and emotional honesty of the best Iranian cinema. The characters are portrayed with honesty and humanity, the story is absorbing, and the climax is a marvel. Majidi reveals profound and universal truths about Mehrollah's confusion. And he closes the film with such a beautiful and perfect image that the audience will feel the urge to applaude.
A lovely and tender film for the entire family.
