Comentario: La periodista británica Zana Briski (la "tía Zana") monta una pequeña escuela de fotografía con un grupo de niños y niñas del Barrio Rojo de Calcuta, hijos de prostitutas, predestinados (especialmente las pequeñas) a la marginación, y les anima a que retraten sus vidas y su entorno, con unos sorprendentes resultados. Un documental desgarrador y doloroso.

Briski, una fotógrafa documental, fue a Calcuta con la intención de fotografiar a las prostitutas. Mientras estaba allí, se hizo amiga de los hijos de éstas y se ofreció a impartir clases de fotografía, con la intención de conseguir fotografiar a sus madres también. Les dio cámaras a los niños para que pudieran aprender fotografía y tratar de mejorar su vida. Los trabajos de los niños son utilizados a los largo de la narración. En el documental se muestran las clases, diálogos sobre fotogafía y el día a día de los niños. Al final del curso, las fotos fueron expuestas y uno de los niños fue enviado a una conferencia fotográfica en Amsterdam. También, en el documental, se ven los esfuerzos de Briski por encontrar escuela para esos niños.
Admist the apparent growing prosperity of India, there is a dark underbelly of poverty of another side of the nation that is little known. This film is a chronicle of filmmakers Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman's efforts to show that world of Calcutta's red light district. To do that, they inspired a special group of children of the prostitutes of the area to photograph the most reluctant subjects of it. As the kids excel in their new found art, the filmmakers struggle to help them have a chance for a better life away from the miserable poverty that threatens to crush their dreams (IMDb).
Born Into Brothels is a documentary about the inspiring non-profit foundation Kids With Cameras, which teaches photography skills to children in marginalized communities. In 1998, New York-based photographer Zana Briski started photographing prostitutes in the red-light district of Calcutta. She eventually developed a relationship with their children, who were fascinated by her equipment. After several years of learning in workshops with Briski, the kids created their own photographs with point-and-shoot 35 mm cameras. Their images capture the intimacy and color of everyday life in the overpopulated sections of Calcutta. Proceeds from the sale of the children's photographs go to fund their future education. Directed by Briski and filmmaker Ross Kauffman, Born Into Brothels was shown at the Sundance Film Festival in 2004 as part of the documentary competition (All Movie Guide).
