"Tranquila ventana a la China actual con amabilidad y sin ceremonias" (Antonio Weinrichter: Cinemanía)
Shenzhen businessman, Da Ming, goes home to Beijing when he thinks his father has died. He finds his father hard at work at the family's bathhouse (the false message was a ruse of Da's mentally-handicapped, exuberant brother, Er Ming, to get Da home). Da stays a couple days, observing his father being social director, marriage counselor, and dispute mediator for his customers and a boon companion to Er. Da is caught between worlds: the decaying district of his childhood and the booming south where he now lives with a wife who's not met his family. When Da realizes his father's health is failing and the district is slated for razing, he must take stock of family and future (IMDb).
AMG Synopsis: A family's differences are reflected in the changing face of China near the turn of the millennium in this drama. In a decaying neighborhood in Beijing, a local bathhouse serves as a meeting place for the elderly men of the community; the house is run by Liu (Zhu Xu), assisted by his son Erming (Jiang Wu), who is mildly retarded and tends to live in a world of his own. Liu's other son, Daming (Pu Cunxin), who now lives in the Southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, arrives for a visit after hearing that Liu had died. Daming is happy to hear that the news of his father's death was greatly exaggerated, but as part of a younger generation that has adopted a Western-influenced lifestyle and business sense (including favoring showers over baths), he feels out of place in his father's world and there's a great emotional distance between the two. But when Erming disappears, the crisis brings Liu and Daming closer together, and Daming decides to extend his visit when he and Liu get word that the bathhouse is scheduled to be torn down in a few weeks. Veteran Chinese actor Feng Shun made his final screen appearance as a man who trains fighting crickets.
AMG Review: It's a familiar tale: The disaffected son with a more "modern" outlook returns to his home to confront his old-values parent and a sibling who has stayed loyal to the parent. What gives Shower its freshness (no pun intended) is the backdrop: contemporary Beijing, a city on the make, with old neighborhoods standing in the way of progress. Liu and his mildly retarded son, Erming, run an old-fashioned bath house, not a trysting spot, but an old men's refuge where water is the commodity that soothes the body and soul. Water serves many roles in the film, including artistic lubrication for an aspiring opera singer. This is a gentle fairy tale of a film: a trio of thugs invade the bath house but are talked out of their mission by Liu, the streets of the decrepit neighborhood are clean and safe enough for late-night jogging by Liu and Erming, a sexually impotent employee is given therapy when Liu allows the man's wife access to the bath house for a late-night tryst. Shower feels like a cross between Rain Man and Barbershop, but its distinct setting trumps the predictability of its story line.
