Sinopsis: Situada en 1702, Hana yori mo naho retrocede tres siglos hasta la época en la que los clanes de samurais ofrecían recompensas económicas a aquellos samurais que llevaran a cabo con éxito actos de venganza. Su protagonista es un joven samurai, Sozaemon Aoki, que llega a Edo (la actual Tokio) con el propósito de vengar a su difunto padre. Busca al enemigo de su padre por toda Edo pero, aparte del hecho de que es un inútil en el manejo de la espada, tiene pocas ganas de seguir adelante con su misión. Alojado en una vivienda pobre, pero rica en relaciones humanas, Sozaemon empieza a apreciar la vida y a preguntarse por el sentido de la venganza. (FILMAFFINITY)

Koreeda, que ya presentó en 1998 en San Sebastián Afterlife (por la que ganó el premio Fipresci), vuelve con una película de un gran estudio (Shochiku, en este caso) en la que, aparentemente, abandona el cine intimista cercano al documental al que nos tenía acostumbrados para ofrecernos un jidaigeki clásico: la historia de un samurai venido a menos, que abandona el campo y va a la ciudad con la intención de vengar la muerte de su padre. Hana es una reflexión sobre la violencia, el amor y la vida, contada con mucho humor, un excelente plantel de actores y actrices y que establece una difusa línea entre realidad y representación (Alpacine).
In a poor district of Edo lives a young samurai named Soza. He has been sent by his clan to avenge the death of his father. He isn't an accomplished swordsman however, and he prefers sharing the life of the residents, teaching the kids how to write etc. When he finally finds the man he is looking for, he will have to decide whether he follows the way of the samurai or chooses peace and reconciliation (IMDb).
Director Hirokazu Koreeda turns the popularly held conventions of the typical samurai evenge tale on their head with this story of a man whose quest to avenge the death of his father gradually takes a back seat to his emerging role as a key figure in the community. The year is 1702, and young samurai Sozaemon Aoki (Junichi Okada) has arrived in Edo to seek revenge against Jubei Kanazawa (Tadanoby Asano). Kanazawa is the man responsible for the death of Aoki's father, and now it's up to the grieving swordsman to settle the score. When Aoki begins teaching the children of Edo to read and write, however, his bloodlust slowly begins to subside as he cones to realize the true value of his useful place in society. Upon falling in love with the beautiful Osae (Rie Miyazawa), Aoki comes to realize that although the sword may be a powerful symbol of strength, allowing oneself to fall victim to its savage allure may not always be the best way to realizing ones true heroism (All Movie Guide).
